Beacon Mountain Playground Team Who we are: We are the Beacon Mountain Playground Team (BMPT), a subcommittee of the Jefferson Park Alliance (JPA). We are parents, professionals, artists, activists, and builders on Beacon Hill working together to create a world class playground in South Seattle. With the reconstruction of Jefferson Park, we’ll soon have access to some of the best views and recreational space in the area. Our playground is a feature piece. The Jefferson Park Alliance has been stewarding, planning, and advocating for the park since 1998. The JPA works with the Parks Department and neighborhood groups to coordinate community involvement, design construction, and maintenance in Jefferson Park BMPT mission statement: The mission of the Beacon Mountain Playground Team is to design, fund, and build an extraordinary community and ecologically oriented playscape in the future Jefferson Park on Beacon Hill. Beacon Hill is an underserved, diverse, and moderate income community. We advocate for an equitable distribution of park resources for families and children in South Seattle. Help Bring a Landmark Playground to Life: Funds for a much needed new playground at Jefferson Park were budgeted in the 1990’s. Today they cover infrastructure and some play equipment, but not the full construction costs of the playground. The raising of significant community funds will allow us to leverage additional City funds in order to realize the complete vision of the Beacon Mountain Playground. Please help us in bringing this landmark playground to life! Our Vision has Three Components Beacon Mountain: The Mountain is envisioned as a climbable collection of sinuous slopes and boulders. From the top you can slide down or activate a child-powered water wheel to circulate water up, and then watch it flow down via playful drainage paths. The mountain connects our children’s play ecology of water and stands as a symbol of our fragile Northwest glacier ecology. Shade Shelter: The shelter is an engaging picnic and community gathering space comprised of two wings. One side opens onto a play meadow, the other faces the cirque of the mountain playscape. A sandbox is nestled between the two wings and provides a safe playspace for toddlers. The shelter hosts a green roof, and a water collection and recirculation source for the child-powered water wheel. Water Exploration Zone: A park-sized sprinkler, for summer cooling and fun, will figure prominently as part of water exploration zone that connects play with the greater circulatory path of water. Jefferson Park is being constructed on land opened up for use by the removal of a 100 year old water reservoir, which will be replaced by an underground reservoir. The Water Exploration Zone carries on this history of water in the park while creating a tremendously exciting and educational experience for our children – and everyone.
