Jefferson Park graces the crest of Beacon Hill and has premier views of downtown Seattle, Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains, and even Mt Baker to the northeast. Developed in the early 1900s as part of the original Olmstead park plan for Seattle, the neighborhood and richly diverse local population treasured it. Overtime, many of the original park spaces gave way to other interests. By the 1990s, much of the park hid behind barbed-wire fences and was low on the priority list for park maintenance and development. In fact, there was so little usable park space that locals and city maps simply referred to the area as Jefferson Park Golf Course. Jefferson Park Alliance is a coalition of individuals and groups dedicated to South Seattle’s Jefferson Park. Our mission is to create a park that can once again be loved and used by the community, and reflects the intent of the Olmsted Brothers’ plan.
Jefferson Park is in the process of a major revitalization, due in no small part to the efforts of JPA volunteers. The park received $8 million from the ProParks funding levy. A new gymnasium was completed in 2004, new walking paths around the golf courses and along Cheasty Boulevard are complete; garden beds flourish on the hill; Work on decommissioning of the North Reservoir and capping of the South Reservoir are well under way. The added space will encompass natural landscaping, picnic areas, play areas, and stunning views of Seattle and Elliot Bay. To continue our work, the JPA needs your input and your energy. There’s no formal membership or requirements other than to want to help grow Jefferson Park. EVERYONE IS WELCOME.
